MC² 2018 Summer Professional Learning Offerings:

This summer, MC² will offer a number of our professional learning workshops available to teachers from any district. Most workshops will be offered in Las Cruces; however a few of our most requested offerings will also be available in Albuquerque.

Registration Costs:
Two-Day Workshops: $200 per person
Three-Day Workshops: $300 per person

  • Number Talks for Grades K-5

    • Learn the power of Number Talks to promote mathematical reasoning aligned to the CCSS-M standards and mathematical practices
    • Develop a plan for building fluency with operations appropriate for your grade level (+, -, x, ÷)
    • Engage in strategic planning focused on a progression of tasks and pedagogical tools that support and extend student thinking

     

    Cost: $300 per person (3-day workshop)

    Structuring Number to Build Fluency with Addition & Subtraction for Grades 1-3

    • Build on place value understanding to develop flexible strategies for adding and subtracting
    • Learn instructional strategies/activities for students to develop foundational knowledge/mental facility for addition and subtraction within 100 and 1000
    • Learn classroom assessment strategies for purposeful instruction of addition and subtraction that support students’ learning needs

    Measurement to Build Understanding of Operations (+, -, x, ÷) for Grades 3-5

    • Have fun integrating measurement, mathematical practices, and the four basic operations to develop problem solving and mathematical reasoning related to Grades 3-5 CCSS-M standards
    • Develop greater facility with choosing and explaining the operations that can be used to solve interesting measurement tasks
    • Master copies of lessons and materials for classroom use will be provided

    Metric Measurement, Place Value, and Decimals for Grades 3-5

    • Integrate measurement, place value relationships, and decimal quantities for meaningful and practical learning of these standards in the CCSS-M
    • Develop conceptual understanding of decimal place value through measurement applications and conversions
    • Develop understanding of the relative size of units within the metric system through hands-on explorations
    • Master copies of lessons and materials for classroom use will be provided

  • Number Talks for Grades 6-10

    Part I: Number Talk Basics with Whole Number Operations

    • Learn the power of Number Talks to promote mathematical reasoning aligned to the CCSS-M standards and mathematical practices
    • Develop strategies for representing students’ math ideas strategically using notation to build understanding
    • Engage in strategic planning focused on a progression of tasks for building fluency with operations appropriate for your grade level
    Part II: Extending Number Talks to Fractions, Decimals, and Integers

    • Learn to use Number Talks to support fluency with fraction and decimal operations
    • Practice a sequence of Number Talks for building fraction and decimal understanding

     

    Note: Part II is intended for teachers routinely using Number Talks in their classroom and/or who have attended Number Talks Part I.

    • Build teachers’ conceptual understanding of probability and statistics concepts outlined in the Grades 6-8 CCSS-M
    • Engage in lessons appropriate for students in grades 6-8 that can be used in your classrooms

    • Build teachers’ conceptual understanding of linear, quadratic, and exponential concepts
    • Engage in activities that support students developing conceptual understanding of these different types of functions
