Introductory Learning Module
Math In Our Communities

Overview

This first MathStar Learning Module introduces collecting, representing, describing and interpreting data. Students describe their community (school and neighborhood) using real mathematical data (collected by students). All MathStar school sites will collect data on a set of standard topics. Each school will then be able to determine their own data sets to describe the school and its students. Students are encouraged to use software that creates graphs from their database or spreadsheets to display their data. Web sites can be used to collect data.

Learning Module Mathematical Focus
Population Identify types of data (categorical and numerical), determine appropriate graphical representations to describe and analyze data, develop hypotheses and make predictions based on data.
Weather Create and analyze stem and leaf, double line graphs, and box and whiskers plots. Calculate mean and median temperatures, explore scaling of graphs
Geography Measurement (area, perimeter, elevation), latitude, longitude
Transportation Make predictions based on data samples, calculate average, and use time and distance to calculate speed
Technology Use appropriate number representations (fractions, decimals, percents), apply and evaluate algebraic expressions, develop graphs and determine appropriate graphical representations
